In keeping with our belief that the study of science is a fundamental part of the education of all young people, science is taught in all grade levels at ISD.  Instruction takes place in purpose-built laboratories which are equipped to support the aims of the curriculum and provide a safe and stimulating learning environment.

MYP science is taught in grades six to ten as a combined science course, made up of topics chosen from biology, chemistry and physics. In grades six to nine all three of these major areas of science are covered each year. In grade ten students choose between a biology/chemistry and a chemistry/physics option. The principal objective of the MYP science course is to provide students with a foundation that will make them scientifically literate so that they are in a position to make informed judgments and decisions about scientific issues and use the scientific process skills for problem solving.

Science is presented as a cooperative venture, involving collaboration between individuals and cooperation on a national and international level. Students learn to look at science as an activity which is constantly changing and developing and which is influenced by social, economic, political, technological, ethical, moral and cultural factors.

In grades 11 and 12, students may choose from the IB science offerings which include biology, chemistry and physics at both the higher and standard levels. In all of the experimental sciences, students are encouraged to become scientifically literate and to develop an awareness of the way in which scientists work and communicate with each other throughout the world. Students gain first-hand experience of the scientific method, which involves the formation, modification and testing of hypotheses through observation and measurement under the controlled conditions of an experiment. It is this approach, along with the falsifiability of scientific hypotheses, which distinguishes the sciences from other disciplines and characterizes each of the experimental sciences.

Students at all levels are expected to be personally engaged in the learning process and to have a positive attitude towards their work. This is encouraged by involving students in inquiry-type activities and investigations and through the use of a variety of continuous assessment techniques, in keeping with the ISD assessment principles. Finally, science teaching at ISD promotes a view of science as a global pursuit requiring worldwide communication and international cooperation.
