IB World School – The IB Middle Years Programme (IBMYP)

All students in grades 6 through 10 are part of The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme at the International School of Düsseldorf. Unlike the longstanding Diploma Programme, the Middle Years Programme (MYP) is relatively new at our school, receiving authorisation in 2004.  Despite its young age, the programme continues to grow and blossom each year.

The Middle Years Programme aims to balance the needs of young curious students fresh from elementary school with the challenges met by older students preparing for the rigours of the Diploma Programme and university study.

To accommodate these diverse needs, we focus on ensuring students have both a strong foundation in core subject area knowledge and skills, and at the same time we encourage interdisciplinary projects and authentic assessment to make what students are learning as interesting and relevant to their real world lives as possible.

The MYP curriculum includes 8 core subjects including two languages, mathematics, science, humanities, the arts (music, drama, and visual arts), physical education, and technology (Information Technology/Design Technology).  In addition students take Life Skills and Options/Elective classes.

The five Areas of Interaction are a feature of the Middle Years Programme that makes it unique.  These organizing themes offer entry points to units of study so that teachers can ensure what they are teaching has relevance beyond the walls of their classrooms. The five AOIs are Approaches to Learning, Community and Service, Environments, Health and Social Education, and Human Ingenuity.

Another unique feature of the MYP is the Personal Project which all students in grade 10 undertake.  This six month independent research project requires that each student create a product through which they demonstrate their understanding of at least one of the Areas of Interaction. This culminating project allows students to pursue an interest of their own using the skills they have developed throughout the MYP Programme.

The MYP is designed for students between the ages of 11 and 16.  These can be challenging years for students because of the numerous changes occurring in many areas of their lives. Our aim is to make the time students spend in the MYP at ISD one of the most interesting, challenging and happy times of their lives.
